The Vaquero Way Influencing Tack......

Vaquero’s, which in Spanish means, “Cowboys”, were Spanish horseman. Their style of horsemanship, gear and training has had an influence on the “Traditional American Cowboy”. Their unique style spread from Europe all the way to the United States.

The Vaquero learned many of their horse skills from Medieval & Renaissance Europe. The European Knights and their war horses used many skills on the battlefield that can be seen today in both the reined working cow horse and dressage.

When the Spanish began to colonize the “America’s”, they used the skills found on the European Battlefields to train their horses.

The Vaquero’s Spanish style of training horses spread throughout California. Once in California the “California” Vaquero began to refine their methods of training horses and working cattle.

Because of the unique climate and culture in California the growing Vaquero tradition of training could take as long as needed. The mild climate allowed for the Vaquero’s training of a horse to take all the time that was needed. So, the California bridle horse evolved to a point where a top hand could ride his horse with just a light string attaching his rein chains to a bit.

The influence of the Vaquero spread from California to Texas. The Texas Cowboy, or what we think of today as the “Classic American Cowboy”, had a different style of training horses and working cattle. The different styles of both the Texas Cowboy and the Vaquero can still be seen today.

One example, is the that the Texas Cowboy prefers to tie their rope directly to the saddle horn by a loop on the tail end, while the Vaquero prefers to wrap his rope around the saddle horn.

The Texas Cowboy uses his horse to work cattle, while the Vaquero uses cattle to work his horses. These two unique styles have grown into two very different competitions.

The cutting horse has grown out of the Texas style , which prefers the use of a horse that is bred to work a cow on its own once that horse has been trained.

The reined working cow horse has grown out of the Vaquero style, which came from the Vaquero tradition of training a horse that is also bred to work a cow but works entirely from the commands of the rider.

Even the buckaroo gear and vaquero gear is different. The Vaquero likes the silver spade bit with silver conchos on the bridle and a fancy set of braided rawhide rommel reins.

The Texas style is a grazer bit and simpler, but functional bridle with a plain set of leather split reins.

As with the ornate design of the Spanish style spurs and straps, (read the “History of Spurs” on my Squidoo Lens) the Spanish influence, through the California Vaquero, can be seen in not only the finesse of the reined working cow horse but in the ornate design of their bits, bridles and romel reins.

Buckaroo Leather Company has continued the Vaquero tradition with many unique styles of leather horse tack, vaquero gear. A few examples are:

LH111A Headstall & Rein set. This is an old time Traditional Vaquero Buckaroo Cowboy Style Leather Headstall & Rein Set with Shaped Cheeks and Flair Brow. It is hand crafted from premium heavy weight Harness Hermann Oak Leather.

BC67 Old style martingale breast collar. Hand crafted from the finest Hermann Oak single ply heavy harness leather. This Old Martingale style shaped breast collar was originally used by the Vaqueros and features an over the shoulder fit for a better pulling position.

Chaps originated in Spain and Mexico and were used for protection against trees and shrubs. Please see my Squidoo Lens on a great history of Chaps and Chinks.

Spurs, not just a tool but an art form.

Spurs can be traced back to the Roman Legions of Julius Caesar . The Romans developed the spurs in order to have a way to steer their horses with their legs, while leaving their hands free to fight. These early spurs had a single sharp protrusion. The revolving rowel, used in western spurs today, probably originated in France.

During the age of chivalry, spurs became a mark of rank. Gold or gilded spurs were only worn by knights or royalty. To further indicate their rank and prestige the knights would adorn their spurs with jewels, thus becoming work of art.

In the 15th century, horse armor, called 'bards" played and important role in influencing spur design. The armor had a section called the "flanchard" which protected the horse's flanks. In order for the spur to reach the horse an extremely long shank was developed, up to a foot in length. By the 16th century the bards popularity became rare and the spur lengths returned to normal.

In Spain, armorers developed large and ornately decorated spurs with rowels. Spur designs in Spain and colonial Mexico were particularly elaborate. For example, the spurs of the Spanish Conquistadors were sometimes called Espuela Grande, the "Grand Spur," and could have rowels as large as six inches around. The conquistadors went to the new world with these ornate designs. Their influence can still be seen today in Mexico and South America. The spur became and still is an integral part of the vaquero and cowboy traditions.

Spur styles also changed in the United States. In colonial days, the English style was popular. This style of spur was light and conservative with a slight curve and small rowel. In 1882, the Calvary wore solid brass spurs that were slightly curved, with a small rowel, black straps, and brass buckle. After the Civil War, the Calvary used a straight shank and eliminated the rowel.

In Western Riding, spurs are not only used as a tool but seen as an art form. The spurs design include handmade engravings, silver and other precious metals.

The Old West style spur straps are quickly becoming the rage of the sage......

The old west designs are coming back in style and have beautiful stampings, tooling's and hand carvings. They are available with hand engraved silver, brass and bright bling. The wider shapes and designs have a more comfortable feel across the top of your foot and you can personalize them very easily with conchas and buckle sets.

The old Dove Wing shaped, pictured above, without buckles are a very simple design and less expensive. Once you put them on your spurs you can leave them attached and just slide off and on the top of your boots.

How to use Sidepull Headstalls.........

Side Pull Headstalls (aka "Bitless Bridle") are used as pictured,
without a bit, and are becoming very
popular in the training arena and for the
experienced trail horse and rider.

Watch Video below

Many Trainers have found the side pull
headstall great for horses who do not
except a bit very well and are fussy
and tense and unable to relax and learn….

It is also excellent for horses that have been
injured in their mouth or sensitive due to
harsh training conditions.

The side pull is fast becoming the choice
in early stages of ground driving and teaching
the basics of turning and stopping.

A Quality leather side pull headstall or bridle
as you see pictured, is designed for the reins
to connect to the rings on each side of the
horses cheeks allowing the rider to communicate
very clearly left and right…….

Different nosebands are available depending on
how much pressure you want to excerpt on their
nose. The single lariat rope nose gives the most
in a narrow area across the nose. The double
rope spreads the pressure out. The flat leather
nose gives the least amount of pressure for the
more trained and experienced horse…..

Trainers in the Natural Horsemanship arenas
have been using different types of side pull
headstalls for a long time…….

We at Buckaroo Leather offer all sizes from
cob/ small hose to large horse/mule and
draft sizes.....

Womens Intuition.....

My beautiful wife and I look forward to the weekends to rejuvenate from a long week of work. We were on our regular mourning walk and reflecting on the past 30 years of my traveling as a salesman to visit my accounts and how much it has changed in the last few years.

Her women’s intuition had been nagging at her about how we have to adjust our way of business and life to survive in the changing times. Traveling costs as fuel, vehicle maintenance, food etc. are having such a huge impact on pricing to our western horse tack business and the environment than ever before.

How we must cut back on fuel to not contribute to foreign oil and the global oil crises which effects the global environment.

So then I asked her, if I slow down my route do you think my dealers will purchase as much by phone or our website if I am not there to help them with what they need? Will I lose presence of our tack?

Michele said, “I don’t think you will because you have built a loyal following for 30 years of American made safe and durable quality tack equipment that horseman and women have confidence in.”

Than she reminded me that we sell, from our website, outside our western states dealer network to the global horseman and women and they are not as familiar with your tack as the western states of the good old USA. She than said I feel consumers are realizing more than ever how much time, impact on the environment and money they can save by shopping near home or at home on the internet.

I than told her how lately I have heard many stories from horseman and women how they are becoming more educated on the better value for your money from the worldwide web in the way of informational websites and blogs. And they are more aware than ever of the inferior imported and unsafe leather horse tack available on the worldwide market.

We have always tried to buy American made products when at all possible as I think most horseman and women do also. Even more so now as Americans try to support the US economy instead of the global market.

Join us at the Brand Family Gathering.
And I am blessed to have such a Powerful Partner
As my lovely Wife!

A Hackamore Bridle to Demand.......

This is the quality AMERICAN made western leather
hackmore bridle you hear about from the cutters warming
up their horses before a competition and anyone
wanting a bitless hackamore bridle to get out
of their horses mouth....

Some horsemen and women call it a loping hackamore...

Some horses need a break from the bit for many reasons
so some folks are finding their horse is more comfortable
and works better without a bit....

This is a round caveson hackamore designed to
fit low on your horse's nose and, because it is round,
it works more like a sidepull than a hackamore.

It has our working 3/4" harness leather double cheek
adjustment headstall with a hand braided fiador (throat latch),
which is adjustable to hold the fine quality
braided rawhide noseband-caveson in position.
And the fiador is important because it works like a throat latch
and is connected to the noseband so if you lead off your
horse the noseband will not pull off their nose.....

We make it with a high quality 5/8"-8' soft nylon
split rein w/poppers for that brokin feel RW330.
Also available with cotton reins.

Weighted Reins, The Rage of the Training and Show Ring......

Weighted Split Reins are becoming popular again as
horseman and women realize how important quality
American made Harness Leather weighted split reins
are for the perfect drape and communication
from the bit to your hands....

Also the weight helps your horse set their head....

The communication from your hands to the bit is
enhanced only in quality leather because the signals
travel so much better in dense supple leather...

Inferior imported leather is flighty, uncomfortable

and has no life or body..

The heavier weight is also desired at the end so
the rein hangs down and is not flighty in the air...

Are Chaps good friends? Of course, and very functional

Here is a fantastic article by a fellow Horseman and writer.

Chaps (pronounced "shaps" and short for chaparajos) were originated as a protective garment worn by cowboys in brushy areas. There are many reasons for the use of chaps from decorative to practical. This study will include the origin as well as the practical uses of chaps.

Chaps originated in Spain and Mexico. The first known use of them was for riders to wear when working cattle. They were two large pieces of cowhide that were used to form a protective shield over both the riders legs as well as the horse's chest. Hooking onto the saddles horn, they served both purposes well, but were bulky and hard to work with; therefore chaps were conceived.

Batwings - Originally the most prevalent type of chaps were batwings. These chaps were mostly just an outer layer of leather, usually with three clasps to hold them on the leg. One clasp was near the top of the leg, one behind the knee and one around mid calf.

You will see batwings in most early westerns and western art. Frederick Remington and Charles Russell probably never heard of shotgun chaps which are more common today. Batwing chaps could keep a cowboy's legs safe from brambles and brush, but they weren't a lot of help keeping the legs warm in cold weather.

Batwings mostly gave way to shotgun chaps in the mid 20th century; however batwings are still popular today among rodeo cowboys for the decorative value as well as the fact that they flop around so much during a ride that they can help show good spurring traits.

Shotgun - Shotgun chaps tend to be more fitted to the individual than batwings. They are formed from leather, usually with a zipper to zip up and encase each leg, as if in armor. Shotguns can be used to keep warm in cold weather as well as protection from thorns and brush.

Both kinds of chaps are also useful in a branding corral protecting against all kinds of dangers such as vaccination needles and hot branding irons.

Chinks (short for chinkaderos) - Chinks came along in the latter part of the 20th century and have grown quite popular, although there are still pockets of holdouts here and there. Chinks have been called "cowboy shorts" by some individuals who don't want to change, but they are quite practical for the working cowboy.

Usually made in a similar fashion to shotguns, chinks are simply cut off around knee to mid-calf level, and have fringe around the outer edge. Much more comfortable in warm weather, chinks, like batwings and shotguns, serve a purpose in the cowboy life style. Since most cowboys wear boots that come up near the knee, chinks protect the area above the boot.

Chaps are also useful for other reasons. Leather chaps stick to a leather saddle or a bareback horse better than do fabric trousers and help the rider stay in the saddle.

Old Cowboy Style Spur Straps, Rage of the Sage....

The Old West style spur straps
are quickly becoming the rage of
the sage......

The old west designs are coming
back in style and have beautiful
stampings, toolings and hand carvings.
They are available with hand engraved silver,
brass and bright bling......

The wider shapes and designs have a more
comfortable feel across the top of your foot
and you can personalize them very easily with
conchas and buckle sets.

The old dove wing shapes as pictured without
buckles are a very simple design and less
expensive. Once you put them on your spurs
you can leave them attached and just slide off

Cowboy Up your Tack & Saddle with Silver...........

As mentioned before and below,
trends in Horse tack seem to follow cycles.

The use of silver adornments on Western
Horse tack is seeing favor by many
western performance Horsemen

There are so many affordable styles
of Conchas and buckle sets on the
market today it very easy to
cowboy up your horse tack.....

They are still handcrafted and
engraved as the old time styles were.....
Very high quality and still very
affordable!!

There are more styles available
because many different finishes have
been developed......
You now have choices like antiqued,
pictured to the right, that give you
the old west weathered look right
off the shelf.......

The upper right picture is the
new concha buckle set. It gives
you an old west look......

These are all easy to put on
your bridle, saddle, and breast collar...

The conchas come with a bridle loop back
for your headstall .....
Screwback or slots for your saddle....

Some headstalls have Chicago screws
at the buckles making it easier to change
them out for silver....
If not you can have a saddle repairmen
or shoe shop modify it for you.....

I see the trend now swinging back
to the old west past when more silver
was popular...

The wider shaped headstall cheeks
with conchas running up and down
them and all over the breast collars ....

You can see how beautiful this
slobber strap looks with a simple
silver buckle!!!!
It also makes it so easy to
change out your mecate
and bit....

The Natural Horsemanship movement has created highly functionable Horse Tack......

The Natural Horsemanship Movement has
evolved tack items as Mecates, slobber straps,
Rope Halters and complete Mecate Bridles
into very popular training and pleasure
riding choices. They are all so versatile........

Rope halters of course have no hardware and
are so adjustable. They are designed to place
pressure points were needed and roll up into
an easy pack away size or leave on under your bridle.....

There are now designs with rings tied into the cheeks
to connect your reins to and ride on down the trail......

Side pull headstalls have evolved somewhat from
this also.....

Mecates tied onto your bridles with slobber straps
have become so popular because they are available
in so many different materials to fit your personal
preferences. Also because you can easily adjust the
length of your reins......

Slobber straps are also available in many different
styles. From plain get the job done, to custom
hand tooled, also with silver conchas and buckles....
The popular ones lately buckle on and off the bit
without having to untie your mecate.....

Spring is Here!! Time to Prep your Tack.....

It is time before you start your spring rides to seriously inspect, clean, condition and oil all your quality horse tack.

First
take everything apart and inspect all your tack for wear, especially at all areas as pictured were your tack folds around the bits, buckles and saddle riggings.. ...
This is were there will be the most wear and stress.....
Replace any parts cracked or stretched.....

Chancing it is not worth the piece of mind and safety risk......

Quality leather horse tack will be more durable and much
less likely to crack..

Unlike imported tack
that has no integrity and will crack
and stretch making it unsafe!!!

Secondly clean all well with lots of water and glycerin

saddle soap. Don't be afraid to get your tack wet. You have to get all the dirt and sweat out.

Third hang it all to dry.

Before it is completely dry oil with a good quality neetsfoot oil...

The drying process will help suck the oil into the leather....

As pictured to the right we offer wear leathers on all
our off billets because it stops your saddle rigging dee rings
from wear into the billets. Causing a stress point!!

Martingales, Why and How They Work

Running Martingales are used to teach your horse to set their head in a collected tucked position allowing them to make better balanced performance moves. And they look their best in the competitive show ring.

Your reins run through the rings creating a leverage teaching them to set their head.

You want to use a good quality Martingale with lots of adjustments, as pictured, so you

can fit it properly. You have options of a full

running martingale, short or long martingale

fork, or a german martingale. The martingale

forks are a simple less expensive option.

Though you need a breast collar to connect the short fork to.

The German Martingale is becoming more popular

because it is the most versatile in that it has specific

reins that work together with the german martingale.

Safety Minded Spring Horsemanship........

With Spring around the corner it is a good time to check
your Horse Tack for safety, care and maintenance....

First check all your tack for wear wherever it bends
around saddle rigging rings, the bit and any buckles..
Check for any cracks or dryness in the leather.
It is a great time to take your tack all apart
and clean well with saddle soap and water.
Use plenty of water to get out all the dirt.....
Then before completely dry put on a good leather
oil and or conditioner.......

It is so important to take the time to safety check and
maintain your tack, not only for the piece of mind but
it will extend the life. All your tack is important to
keep in good condition to save yourself injury.....

Beware of economical priced tack, you get what you pay
for, there is a reason it is priced cheap..........
Quality leather horse tack will give you by far better
safety minded performance and better value for
your money...

Our family Buckaroo Leather includes extra wear leathers on our
off billets and latigo cincha tie straps in many colors to match
your saddle and tack.......

You will get better life and durability out of American Made Quality Horse Tack, and if taken proper care of, hand down to your little buckaroos.....
Always keep in mind, the unbridled power of a horse can be so explosive.
